An elephant worked in gold stands against a deep maroon ground, the two tones meeting with no blending between them. The band adjusts.
Most stone-set rings put colour on top of metal. This one reverses it — the maroon is the background and the gold elephant sits inside it, so the metal becomes the figure and the colour becomes the field. That reversal is what makes the animal readable at this size. A gold elephant on a gold ground would need an outline cut around it to be seen at all; against a dark colour it separates instantly, with no outline needed.
Elephants carry a specific meaning in Indian ornament rather than being decorative animals: they stand for Gajalakshmi, for the ceremonial procession, for the auspicious arrival. The posture matters — a raised trunk is the gesture of blessing, which is the form used on temple doorways and wedding invitations, as opposed to a walking elephant, which belongs to hunting and court scenes.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
A festival and wedding ring. Maroon and gold is the most traditional pairing there is, so it belongs with silk, gold-bordered sarees, ivory and maroon itself. Wear it alone, with gold earrings rather than silver.
Festivals, weddings, pujas, receptions and daytime functions.
Moderate. The face is worked sheet rather than solid, but it is broad across the finger.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
Type: Adjustable two-tone statement ring. Metal: Brass. Finish: Gold-tone plating with maroon colour field. Work: Gold elephant in relief against a maroon ground. Fit: Adjustable, open band.
An adjustable band is a tapered strip coiled so the ends overlap, rather than a closed circle. It fits a range of fingers, which makes it an easy gift, but it is worth knowing how to treat it: open and close it off the hand, with both thumbs, in small movements. Forcing it on and off at the finger is what eventually fatigues the metal at the overlap.
Nothing here is hallmarked and none of it carries resale value, and both facts are stated plainly rather than buried. What you are buying is the design and the finish at a price that lets you match a piece to one outfit without weighing up the cost.
