A kundan pair: jhumkas in gold-polished brass, stone-set across the face and coloured stones. Three small bells hang in a row. They measure about 3 inches.
What makes this a jhumka rather than a drop is the hollow bell: the whole lower half is a dome of thin metal with an open mouth. That construction is why an earring this wide still weighs almost nothing on the lobe.
Three small bells hang in a row along the lower edge. Three is the usual number — two reads as unfinished, four crowds the arc.
The lower half hangs in separate strands rather than as one plate, so the earring moves in parts and catches light at several depths.
A fringe of small pearls finishes the lower edge. Pearls do something no faceted stone can — they give back a soft diffused light, which calms a design that would otherwise be all glitter.
It is a long earring, and length is the point of it — a piece this size is meant to be seen from across a room.
Underneath the finish it is brass, given a warm gold polish rather than a thin bright electroplate. A polish of this kind sits better against kundan work, because the slightly deeper colour is closer to what the setting technique was invented for.
The stones are kundan-style: flat-topped, bedded in a rim of metal rather than gripped in claws. In true kundan, pure gold foil is burnished cold around the stone until friction alone holds it, with no heat and no solder. Costume work copies the look in plated brass, and the broad flat rim is the tell.
8 shades are available: Green, Baby Pink, Red, White, Pink, Blue, Black and Purple. The swatches on this page show them; the shade you choose is confirmed on your enquiry before anything is charged.
These belong with a saree or a lehenga rather than a high-collared kurta, and they want the ears clear. A bell that cannot swing is only a shape.
There is no sense in which this is an investment piece, and that is rather the point of it — you can buy a pair that suits one outfit, wear it to one wedding, and be perfectly satisfied.
Treat the finish as the wearing part. Keep it away from water, perfume and hair spray, put the earrings on after you have finished dressing, and wipe them with a dry cotton cloth before they go away. Stored dry in a zip pouch with the air pressed out, the finish lasts for years; left in a humid bathroom it will not last a season.
Instead of an add-to-cart checkout you will find an enquiry button, and that is deliberate. These arrive in small quantities per colour, and the colour you want has to be confirmed before we charge for it. Send the enquiry with the shade you are after and we will reply with stock, price and timing. Payment is prepaid in every case. We do not offer cash on delivery.
