A darkened pair of hook earrings, German silver over brass with the highlights rubbed back and coloured stones. A teardrop stone leads the design. They measure about 1 inch.
An open hook carries them. That fitting leaves the earring free to turn, so the piece shows its face and its edge in turn as the wearer moves.
The main stone is a pear, or teardrop. It is the shape that suits a hanging earring best, because the point leads the eye downward along the line the earring already takes.
Two stones are used, one above the other, so the earring has a rhythm instead of a single focus.
Each stone is held in a bezel — a continuous rim of metal folded over the edge rather than claws gripping it. A bezel is the most secure setting there is and the least likely to catch on cloth.
The surface carries granulation — tiny metal beads fused to the body. It is a four-thousand-year-old technique, and on oxidised work the grains hold the darkening in their hollows, which is what gives the piece its depth.
The finish is oxidised German silver over brass. Oxidising is a deliberate chemical darkening, not tarnish and not dirt — the dark sits in the recesses and the raised surfaces are polished back, which is what gives this kind of work its depth.
The stones are Monalisa, a translucent glass stone sold under that name across India. It is not a gemstone and Keyura does not describe it as one. What it is is the only material that gives this depth of colour for the money.
