A closer look

A stud sits flat on the lobe and goes through a single piercing, which makes it the easiest of all earrings to wear — nothing swings, nothing catches on a dupatta, and it can be left on all day.

The centre is an engraved disc, the lines cut by hand so no two pairs carry exactly the same marks.

The petals are marquise-cut, pointed at both ends. That cut throws its light along the long axis, so a ring of them reads as a star rather than as separate points.

Marquise-cut stones radiate from the centre like petals. The marquise is the one cut that tapers at both ends, which is why it is the shape every flower design reaches for.

Coloured glass stones are used alongside the clear ones. Glass is the right choice for colour at this price: it takes a deeper, more saturated shade than any cut crystal does.

What it is made of

The metal is brass with a German silver finish. German silver contains no silver at all — it is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc that happens to be silver-white, and it has been used for Indian tribal and oxidised jewellery for well over a century because it takes a blackening beautifully.

The stones are Monalisa, a translucent glass stone sold under that name across India. It is not a gemstone and Keyura does not describe it as one. What it is is the only material that gives this depth of colour for the money.

There is no sense in which this is an investment piece, and that is rather the point of it — you can buy a pair that suits one outfit, wear it to one wedding, and be perfectly satisfied.

Care

A plated or oxidised finish is a surface, so it wears where it rubs. Perfume and sweat dull it fastest — spray first, dress second. Wipe the pair with a soft dry cloth after wearing and seal them in a pouch with the air squeezed out, because it is oxygen and damp that do the damage, not use.
