A small round gold face is divided into quarters filled alternately with flat-cut red and green stones, the whole ringed by a close border of seed pearls. The band adjusts.
Dividing a small face into four equal segments and alternating two colours is the simplest possible way to make colour read at this scale. There is no motif to recognise and no pattern to decipher — just four blocks, which the eye takes in instantly. On a face barely wider than the band, anything more detailed would turn to mush at arm's length.
The stones are cut flat and fitted edge to edge rather than being domed and dropped into settings. That is the kundan manner — stones shaped to fill the space rather than the space cut to fit the stones — and it produces a continuous plane of colour broken only by thin gold lines, instead of separate bright bumps.
A seed pearl border frames the face so it reads as deliberate rather than simply ending, and it adds a soft outer ring that makes a small piece look complete. It is also the detail that places this in the kundan tradition rather than the plain gold one — pearl edging and flat-cut stones almost always travel together.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. The quartered design has no single right way up.
This is a stacking ring. Wear it alongside a plain band, or two on different fingers — an option the wide kundan pieces do not offer. It suits silk, cotton and Western clothes equally.
Daily wear, office, festivals, college and travel.
Light and low, though the pearl border stands slightly proud, so take it off before anything rough.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
