A round floral face with a raised centre and a beaded edge sits on an adjustable band — the plainest and most traditional shape in the range. Sold as a pair.
This is the shape most Indian women actually wear: a small round floral face, nothing coloured, nothing that catches. It is the form that has been made in village silver for generations, and it is the one that gets put on at a wedding and left on. Everything else in this category is a variation on it.
A round face has no corners to dig into the neighbouring toe, no orientation to get wrong as the ring turns, and no projecting element to catch on a sandal strap. Those three constraints are what produced the shape, and they are why a bichiya looks much the same today as it did a century ago — the design is solved.
Bichiya are worn as a pair on the second toe of each foot. In most traditions they are a marker of marriage, put on during the wedding itself, which is why they are made to be comfortable enough for permanent wear rather than for an occasion.
Adjustable at the back, so no size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
Wear as a pair on the second toes, with or without a payal. It suits sarees, salwar and everyday wear equally, and needs no thought at all.
Daily wear, weddings, festivals, pujas and everyday traditional dress.
Light and low, with a rounded beaded edge and nothing to catch.
This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is darkened and the raised surfaces are then polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the whole point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line and pierced opening read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface, and it means small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.
Toe rings live a harder life than any other jewellery — they are in shoes, in water and against the floor all day. Take them off before a bath or a swim, dry them if they do get wet, and wipe them with a dry soft cloth. Never use silver polish or dip cleaners: they strip the blackening out of the recesses, which is the one kind of damage that cannot be undone on an oxidised piece.
