A small crescent sits across the toe with a beaded edge following its curve, blackened in the recesses. German silver finish, roughly 1 inch, supplied as a 2-piece set.
The crescent — chand — is among the oldest motifs in Indian ornament and appears on maang tikkas, nose rings, earrings and bangles. On a toe ring it works for a practical reason as well as a symbolic one: a crescent is wider than it is tall, so it spreads across the toe without standing proud, which is exactly what a piece worn inside shoes needs.
Small raised beads follow the outer curve. On a toe ring beading is protective rather than decorative — the beads stand proudest of anything on the piece, so they take the scuffs from floors and sandal straps and the worked face inside them lasts far longer than it would behind a plain edge.
The blackening in the recesses is what separates the beads from one another and the crescent from its band. On a face barely a centimetre across, that contrast is the only thing making the shape read at all.
Adjustable at the back, so no size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
Wear as a pair on the second toes. The low profile makes this one of the easier shapes to wear in closed shoes.
Daily wear, weddings, festivals, pujas and everyday traditional dress.
Type: Toe rings (bichiya), 2-piece set. Metal: Brass with German silver finish. Work: Crescent face with a beaded edge. Size: approximately 1 inch. Fit: Adjustable, open band.
This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is darkened and the raised surfaces are then polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the whole point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line and pierced opening read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface, and it means small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
