Several small pointed leaves spray outward from a central stem across the toe, each one separately cut and blackened between the layers, on an adjustable band. German silver finish, roughly 1 inch, supplied as a 2-piece set.
Instead of one leaf lying along the toe, this is a group of smaller ones fanning out from a stem. That fills the width of the toe rather than its length, so the piece reads as broader and more decorative — and because the leaves are separately cut, there are real gaps between them where a single stamped shape would be solid.
The leaves overlap, and overlapping is only legible when the gaps between layers are darker than the surfaces. The oxidised finish sinks into every overlap, so the spray reads as leaves at different depths rather than a flat fan. In bright polish the same piece would collapse into one shape.
Toe rings are worn on the second toe of both feet, in most Indian traditions as a marker of marriage and put on during the wedding itself. They are traditionally silver because gold is not worn below the waist in orthodox practice — which is why even households that could afford gold kept their bichiya in silver.
Adjustable at the back, so no size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
Wear as a pair on the second toes. A worked toe ring sits better with a plain payal than with another heavily worked piece.
Daily wear, weddings, festivals, pujas and everyday traditional dress.
Type: Toe rings (bichiya), 2-piece set. Metal: Brass with German silver finish. Work: Layered leaf spray. Size: approximately 1 inch. Fit: Adjustable, open band.
This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is darkened and the raised surfaces are then polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the whole point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line and pierced opening read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface, and it means small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
