A long narrow leaf lies along the toe, veined down its length and blackened in the grooves, on an adjustable band. German silver finish, roughly 1 inch, supplied as a 2-piece set.
Most bichiya put a round face across the toe. A leaf runs lengthways instead, which suits the shape of a toe far better than a circle does — it follows the line rather than sitting across it, and it makes the foot look longer rather than wider. It is also the most practical orientation: nothing projects sideways to press against the neighbouring toes.
Without its veins a metal leaf is just a pointed oval. The branching lines are what make it legible, and because they are fine and shallow they depend entirely on the blackening to show at all. Fill them with darkness and the leaf appears; polish them bright and it goes back to being a blank shape.
Bichiya are the toe rings worn on the second toe of both feet, in most Indian traditions as a marker of marriage and put on during the wedding itself. They are traditionally silver rather than gold, because gold is not worn below the waist in orthodox practice.
Adjustable at the back, so no size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once rather than flexing it daily.
Wear as a pair on the second toes, with or without a payal. A worked toe ring sits better with a plain anklet than with another heavily worked piece.
Daily wear, weddings, festivals, pujas and everyday traditional dress.
Type: Toe rings (bichiya), 2-piece set. Metal: Brass with German silver finish. Work: Veined leaf face. Size: approximately 1 inch. Fit: Adjustable, open band.
This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is darkened and the raised surfaces are then polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the whole point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line and pierced opening read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface, and it means small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
