A butterfly sits across the finger with its wings open and worked in fine pattern, the body a raised ridge down the centre. The band adjusts.
Most figurative jewellery has to solve the problem of a motif that only works from one angle — an elephant or a peacock is seen in profile and looks wrong turned around. A butterfly with open wings is mirror-symmetrical by nature, so it reads correctly from either side and only needs to be the right way up. On an adjustable ring that rotates freely during the day, that is a real practical advantage over the other animal designs.
The wings are the whole design surface, and they are worked with fine repeating detail rather than left plain — which is accurate as well as decorative, since real butterfly wings are patterned and not coloured blocks. The oxidising fills that detail so the pattern reads, while the raised body down the centre stays polished and bright, giving the piece a clear spine that separates the two wings.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. Set the butterfly upright — it has a top and bottom even though it has no left and right.
Wear it alone or with a plain narrow band. Butterflies read as lighter and more playful than the peacock and elephant designs, which makes this one of the easier oxidised pieces for everyday and for younger wearers.
Daily wear, college, festivals, travel and daytime functions.
Light, with the wings lying close to the finger so nothing catches.
This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is deliberately darkened and then the raised surfaces are polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the entire point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line, pierced opening and raised edge read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface. It also means the finish is not uniform by design, and small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.
Put it on after perfume, hand cream and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth only. Do not use silver polish, dip cleaners or toothpaste — they strip the blackening out of the recesses, which is the one kind of damage that cannot be undone on an oxidised piece. Store it dry in a pouch, away from other rings that could scratch it.
