A round face carries a flower worked in relief at its centre, ringed by a border of small raised beads. Blackened in the recesses and polished on the high points. Sold as a pair.
Beading around the edge is not only decorative on a toe ring — it is protective. The beads stand proudest of anything on the piece, so they take the scuffs from floors, sandals and shoe linings, and the worked face inside them survives much longer than it would behind a plain flat edge. It is the same reasoning that puts a raised rim on a coin.
The centre flower is raised from behind rather than cut away from the front, so it is rounded rather than incised. That makes it considerably more durable at this scale — an engraved line wears shallow, while a raised dome simply polishes brighter.
The blackening in the recesses is what separates the petals from the ground and each bead from its neighbour. On a face barely a centimetre across, that contrast is the only thing making the design legible at all.
Adjustable at the back, so no size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
Wear as a pair on the second toes. It suits sarees, salwar and bare feet, and sits comfortably alongside a plain payal.
Daily wear, weddings, festivals, pujas and everyday traditional dress.
Light, and the rounded beaded rim means there are no sharp edges against the neighbouring toes.
This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is darkened and the raised surfaces are then polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the whole point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line and pierced opening read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface, and it means small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.
Toe rings live a harder life than any other jewellery — they are in shoes, in water and against the floor all day. Take them off before a bath or a swim, dry them if they do get wet, and wipe them with a dry soft cloth. Never use silver polish or dip cleaners: they strip the blackening out of the recesses, which is the one kind of damage that cannot be undone on an oxidised piece.
