A worked antique silver face is ringed by a border of small raised beads, each one catching a separate point of light around the edge. The band adjusts.
A plain cut edge on a ring reads as the place where the metal stops. A beaded one reads as a deliberate frame, and that difference is why beading appears on the rim of almost every piece of traditional Indian and European silver alike. Practically, the beads also take the knocks: being the most proud part of the piece, they wear first, which protects the worked surface inside them. The border is doing a structural job as well as a decorative one.
Each bead is a tiny dome, and a dome always has exactly one bright point regardless of the angle it is viewed from. A ring of them therefore produces a ring of small highlights that persists however the hand is held — unlike a flat polished rim, which flashes at one angle and goes dark at another. On an oxidised piece this matters even more, because the blackening between the beads is what makes each one read separately.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
With no colour anywhere it goes with everything. Wear it alone, or stack it with one plain band. It is restrained enough for an office and traditional enough for a festival.
Daily wear, office, festivals, college and travel.
Light and fairly flat. The beaded rim is slightly raised but rounded, so nothing scratches.
This is brass given an oxidised, antique-silver finish rather than solid silver. The metal is deliberately darkened and then the raised surfaces are polished back, so the blackening stays in the recesses while the high points stay bright. That contrast is the entire point of oxidised work — it is what makes every engraved line, pierced opening and raised edge read separately instead of dissolving into one shiny surface. It also means the finish is not uniform by design, and small variations between pieces are normal rather than faults.
Put it on after perfume, hand cream and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth only. Do not use silver polish, dip cleaners or toothpaste — they strip the blackening out of the recesses, which is the one kind of damage that cannot be undone on an oxidised piece. Store it dry in a pouch, away from other rings that could scratch it.
