This long mangalsutra keeps the chain traditional and puts the interest in the pendant. Four strands of small black beads run down from a plain chain at the neck, joined at intervals by patterned gold-tone spacers, and they end in a round pendant worked as a sunburst, with fine ridges radiating outward from a flower at the centre. That flower is set in green with red stone petals around it, and a fringe of enamel teardrops hangs below. At about 28 g it is the lightest of the long mangalsutras in this range.
The bead sections are the classic construction: four parallel lines of tiny faceted black beads, grouped in pairs, running the length of both sides. The spacers between them are shaped rather than plain bars, with a scrolled outline and a stamped pattern that catches light against the matte black of the beads. Where the strands converge, a pair of stylised birds flanks the top of the pendant, their forms worked into the metal rather than applied. The pendant itself is a full circle divided into fine radiating ridges, giving it the look of a sun or a lotus seen from above, with a domed green centre ringed by small red stone petals. The fringe beneath alternates gold drops with enamelled teardrops in red and green.
A round pendant sits differently from a fan-shaped one, filling a compact space rather than spreading across the chest, which makes this an easier long mangalsutra to wear with a fitted blouse or a narrow kurta. Keep the neckline plain so the sunburst is not competing with embroidery. Green and red run through the pendant, so an outfit in either shade ties together neatly, and cream, gold and black all let it stand alone. Small earrings finish the look.
Weddings, festivals, Karwa Chauth, Teej, pujas and family functions, and as a gift for a wife, sister or daughter-in-law. Its lighter weight also makes it a sensible choice for a long function where a heavier piece becomes tiring.
Keep the piece away from water, perfume, hair spray and sanitiser, and put it on after you have finished dressing. Wipe it with a dry soft cloth after each wear, taking care around the stone settings at the centre. Store it flat in its pouch so the four bead strands stay parallel, and keep it apart from harder jewellery that could chip the enamel drops.
