This long mangalsutra pairs woven mesh straps with short panels of black beads and finishes in a pendant with a distinctive swirled fan, its ridges turning around a deep maroon flower rather than radiating straight out from it. That twist is the detail that separates it from the more common straight-pleated designs. A fringe of small enamel drops in several colours hangs along the lower edge, and a simple hook closes the piece at the back of the neck. The metal carries a warm gold tone from a copper polish.
From the hook at the back, a fine chain runs to the point where the design proper begins. Two flat straps of woven gold-tone mesh carry down each side, interrupted by short double-line panels of black beads, with round openwork rosettes marking every junction. The rosettes are worked in relief, each with a raised centre surrounded by pierced petals, and they repeat often enough to give the chain a rhythm. The pendant beneath is broad and scalloped along its lower edge, and its surface is worked in fine ridges that curve around the centre in a swirl. At the heart of that swirl sits a raised flower in deep maroon, and paisley shapes sweep outward on either side. Along the bottom hang slim enamel drops in red, green and other shades, which catch light as you move.
The swirl in the pendant reads best when nothing else competes with it, so wear this over a plain neckline and skip a second chain. It sits well with silk, chanderi and cotton sarees, and with plain anarkalis. Because the enamel fringe carries several colours, the piece is easier to match across a wardrobe than a single-colour pendant would be, and it works equally with maroon, green, cream and gold outfits. Keep the ear simple with studs or small jhumkas.
Weddings and receptions, festival evenings, Karwa Chauth and Teej, family pujas, anniversaries, and gifting to a wife or daughter-in-law. It is the kind of mangalsutra kept for occasions rather than worn to work.
Wipe the piece with a dry soft cloth after wearing, paying attention to the mesh, where dust settles more readily than on a plain chain. Keep it away from water, perfume, hair spray and sanitiser, and put it on only after you have finished getting ready. Store it laid flat in its pouch so the straps do not crease and the enamel drops do not knock against other jewellery.
