This gold plated long mangalsutra is the fuller, more traditional version of the rani haar style: four dense strands of black beads running the length of both sides, broken by patterned bar spacers, ending in a wide fan pendant with a red stone flower at its centre. Unlike several of the long mangalsutras in this range, which are finished with a copper polish, this one is genuinely gold plated, and the tone is correspondingly brighter and more even across the metalwork.
The bead sections are worked closely, with four parallel lines of small faceted black beads packed tightly enough that very little thread shows between them. The spacers are flat rectangular bars, each filled edge to edge with a fine stamped pattern of small repeating motifs, and they sit at regular intervals so the strands stay flat and parallel across the chest. The pendant is broad and shallow, its lower half pleated into fine ridges that fan outward, with two paisley wings curving in from either side towards a raised flower set with red stones. Along the bottom hangs a double fringe, gold drops alternating with slim enamelled teardrops in red and green, which is what gives the pendant movement against the stillness of the bead strands above.
The brighter plating on this piece suits richer fabrics, so wear it with silk, brocade or a heavier festive georgette rather than with cotton. Keep the neckline plain and let the four bead strands lie flat across the chest, which is where a densely strung mangalsutra looks its best. Traditional colours work well underneath, particularly maroon, deep green and royal blue, and gold-toned bangles complete it. As with any long style, avoid a second chain at the neck.
Weddings and receptions, sangeet and engagement functions, Diwali, Karwa Chauth and Teej, and as a gift for a wife or daughter-in-law. It is the piece for occasions where the mangalsutra is meant to be seen rather than tucked away.
Gold plating is a surface layer, so keep this piece away from water, perfume, hair spray and sanitiser and put it on only after you have finished dressing. Wipe it with a dry soft cloth after wearing and store it laid flat in its pouch, never folded, so the four bead strands stay parallel and the plating on the spacer bars is not rubbed by other jewellery.
