Layered petals in gold-tone metal radiate outward from a deep red stone at the centre, each ring of petals slightly larger than the one inside it. The band adjusts.
Red and gold is the combination Indian bridal jewellery is built on, and the reason is more than tradition. Red is a warm colour and gold is a warm metal, so the two agree rather than contrast — which means a red stone appears to belong in a gold setting in a way a blue or green one never quite does. Set the same stone in silver and it will look placed there; set it in gold and it looks grown there.
The rosette is built in tiers rather than as one flat layer, with each ring of petals offset so it shows through the gaps of the one above. That offsetting is what gives a gold flower depth without needing any darkening — the petals shade each other, so shadow is built into the structure rather than applied to the surface. It is how gold jewellery achieves what oxidising achieves on silver.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
A wedding ring in the ceremonial sense. Wear it with Banarasi or Kanjeevaram silk, maroon, ivory and gold-bordered cotton, alone on the hand, with gold earrings.
Weddings, receptions, festivals, pujas and evening functions.
Moderate. The tiered construction stands proud of the finger, so it is an occasion ring rather than a daily one.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
Type: Adjustable rosette statement ring. Metal: Brass. Finish: Gold-tone plating. Work: Tiered offset petals around a bezel-set red stone. Fit: Adjustable, open band.
A tall setting looks impressive and catches on everything. If you want a ring for daily wear, the flat and low ones are the ones that survive; keep the raised and fringed designs for occasions where your hands are not doing much.
A piece at this price is bought to be worn rather than kept. The sensible way to judge it is by how often it will leave the box, not by what it would fetch if it never did.
