A long rectangular purple stone lies along the finger in a gold-tone setting, framed on all four sides by two close rows of small seed pearls. The band adjusts.
A single row of pearls would outline the stone. Two rows turn the border into a band in its own right, roughly as wide as the stone is deep, so the face reads as a framed panel rather than a stone with an edge. It also makes the ring considerably larger than the stone alone would — most of the area you see is pearl, not colour.
Purple is uncommon in Indian jewellery, where red, green and blue dominate, and it behaves differently from all three. It is the only one that is neither clearly warm nor clearly cool, so it neither harmonises with gold the way red does nor opposes it the way blue does — it simply sits apart, which is why a purple stone looks modern on a traditional setting.
The rectangle runs along the finger rather than across it. That is what makes a stone this large wearable: set crossways the same piece would overhang both neighbouring fingers. Running lengthways it also lengthens the hand rather than widening it.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. Sit the long edges square along the finger rather than letting it settle at an angle.
Wear it alone with the hand bare. Purple suits ivory, cream, grey, white and mauve, and the pearls keep the piece softer than an all-stone ring of the same size would be.
Weddings, receptions, parties, festivals and evening functions.
Moderate. The double pearl border stands proud all round, so it is an occasion ring rather than an all-day one.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
