A wide circular rosette of pointed petals radiates from a central stone, each petal filled with green or red enamel held in raised gold cells. The band is open at the back and adjusts.
This is meenakari in its classical form: the gold is worked first into raised walls, and the colour is laid into the compartments between them, so every petal is bounded by a visible gold line. That is why enamel work looks the way it does — the metal is not a background the colour sits on, it is the drawing, and the enamel fills the shapes. Stones are set into metal; enamel is set into gaps. The distinction is what gives meena pieces their stained-glass quality.
These two are the oldest meenakari pair, and they work because they are near-opposites that gold reconciles — on their own, red and green fight; separated by gold cell walls, each is isolated and the eye reads them as a pattern rather than a clash. Alternating them petal by petal around a circle is the most traditional arrangement there is.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. Ease it open with both hands and set it once.
A full statement ring for festivals and weddings. It belongs with silk, gold-bordered sarees, maroon, ivory and bottle green. Wear it alone with the rest of the hand bare, and pair with gold earrings rather than silver.
Festivals, weddings, pujas, receptions and daytime functions.
Moderate. The rosette is worked sheet rather than solid, but it is wide, so it is better suited to occasions than to daily wear.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and keep liquid away from the enamel. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
