A crescent moon in gold-tone metal lies across the finger, its inner field filled with red enamel and its whole curved outline edged with small seed pearls. The band adjusts.
The crescent is among the oldest motifs in Indian ornament, appearing as chand on maang tikkas, nose rings, earrings and bangles long before it reached rings. It carries both the obvious lunar association and a link to Shiva, who wears it in his hair. Unusually among ornamental shapes it also has a definite orientation — a crescent lying on its back reads quite differently from one standing on end.
The red is laid into the crescent's inner field, bounded by raised gold walls, in the meenakari manner. Filling the whole shape rather than dotting colour onto it means the moon reads as a solid red form outlined in gold — the metal becomes the drawing and the enamel the body, which is the reverse of how a stone-set piece works.
Seed pearls follow the entire outline, inner curve and outer. That is more work than edging a circle, because the border has to change direction at both horns, and it is what gives the crescent its crisp silhouette against the hand. A plain gold rim would have let the shape blur into the finger.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. A crescent has a right way up, so sit it with the horns pointing the way you prefer and leave it there.
Wear it alone. Red and gold suits silk, gold-bordered sarees, maroon and ivory, and the piece is compact enough for daytime as well as evening.
Festivals, weddings, pujas, receptions and daytime functions.
Light, though the pearl border stands slightly proud, so take it off before anything rough.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and keep liquid away from the enamel. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
