A teardrop-shaped gold face is filled with panels of red, green and blue enamel divided by gold lines, and the whole outline is ringed with a close border of small seed pearls. The band adjusts.
The teardrop set point-upward is the paan — the betel leaf — one of the most persistent outlines in Indian jewellery, and a shape that carries its own associations with hospitality and auspicious offering. It is used constantly in kundan and meenakari work because its asymmetry gives a design a direction, unlike a circle, and because the widening lower half provides a natural field for colour.
Red, green and blue are set in separate compartments with raised gold walls between them. Those walls are not decoration — they are what makes enamel work possible, holding each colour in place through firing so one does not bleed into the next. When you look closely at meenakari, the gold outlines are the craft; the colour simply fills what the metal has drawn.
Seed pearls ring the entire outline. They do the same job a beaded rim does on a plain metal piece — framing the face so it reads as deliberate rather than simply ending — but with a softer, warmer edge that suits the enamel inside better than a hard metal border would.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. The teardrop has a point, so sit it upright along the finger.
Wear it alone. It belongs with silk, gold-bordered sarees, ivory and maroon, and pairs with gold earrings rather than silver.
Festivals, weddings, pujas, receptions and daytime functions.
Light for the size, though the pearl border stands slightly proud, so take it off before anything rough.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and keep liquid away from the enamel. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
