A lotus form in gold-tone metal spreads across the finger, its leaves set with flat-cut green stones around a red centre, the outline edged with small seed pearls. The band adjusts.
Most lotus jewellery shows the flower face-on as a circle of petals. This one is seen from the side, spreading horizontally across the finger — which is how a lotus actually sits on water, and a far less common way to render it. The sideways view gives the design a left and a right rather than radial symmetry, so it runs across the hand instead of sitting as a disc on it.
The colour placement follows the plant: green on the spreading outer forms, red concentrated at the centre. That sounds obvious but most stone-set lotus rings ignore it entirely and scatter colour for effect. Following the botany means the eye reads a flower before it reads a pattern, which is what keeps a piece this colourful from looking merely decorative.
The stones are cut flat and fitted to the shapes rather than domed and dropped into settings — the kundan approach. The result is a continuous surface of colour divided by thin gold lines, rather than a row of separate bright bumps standing off the metal.
Adjustable at the back, so no ring size is needed. The flower has a right way up, so sit it level across the finger.
Wear it alone. It belongs with silk, gold-bordered sarees, ivory, maroon and green, and pairs with gold earrings rather than silver.
Festivals, weddings, pujas, receptions and daytime functions.
Moderate. It spreads across the finger, so it is better suited to occasions than to a working day.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets. Rings have a harder life than earrings — hands are washed, knocked and creamed all day — so a gold-plated ring will show wear sooner than a gold-plated earring will. Taking it off before washing your hands makes more difference than anything else you can do.
Put it on after hand cream, perfume and sanitiser, and take it off before washing up, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner. Store it dry in a pouch rather than loose, so it cannot rub against other rings.
