A flat butterfly sits at one end of an open twin band, its wings cut right through with a scatter of round openings of different sizes. Opposite, a round brilliant-cut stone stands raised in slim claws. The holes are what make this version worth having.
Most inexpensive butterfly jewellery suggests wing markings by stamping or engraving them into flat metal, which looks exactly as cheap as it is. Cutting the markings right through the wings changes the piece completely: against skin the openings read as dark spots, so the pattern is legible from a distance, and in strong light small bright shapes fall onto the finger beneath. It costs more to make and it is immediately obvious.
The openings are deliberately irregular — larger towards the outer edge of each wing, smaller near the body — which echoes how real wing markings taper and keeps the pattern from looking mechanical. Every cut edge is deburred and smoothed, so there is nothing sharp against the neighbouring finger. The body between the wings is a slim ridged line. The solitaire opposite is claw-set and raised to let light enter from the sides. One fine wire forms both bands, and the ring weighs around four grams.
Wear it on the ring or middle finger with the rest of the hand plain, since the twin bands already give the layered effect. The pierced wings make this the most graphic of the butterfly wraps, which suits plain clothing and solid colours particularly well. Turn the band so the butterfly leads by day and the stone by night.
Every opening in the wings doubles the exposed metal, because the inside of each cut is a surface too, and those cut faces are the first thing to dull on an ordinary plated ring. Once they go grey the openings stop reading as crisp shapes and the butterfly looks merely rough. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here cover the cut faces as well as the wings.
The open wrap makes the ring adjustable across most finger sizes. The wings lie flat and the cut edges are smoothed, so it is comfortable for daily wear.
Use a dry soft brush and work it through the wing openings from both sides, and brush gently around the claws. Check occasionally that the stone sits firm. Put the ring on after perfume and lotion, store it in its pouch, and remove it before swimming, bathing and housework.
