A fine wire travels twice around the finger and ends at two points, one carrying a softly veined leaf and the other a single round stone raised in claws. The leaf and the stone face each other across the finger, which gives the ring a sense of balance that a single-ended design never has.
The pairing is what makes this piece work. A solitaire on its own is formal and slightly predictable; a leaf on its own is pretty but quiet. Put them at opposite ends of the same wrap and each one changes the other — the stone stops the leaf from looking merely decorative, and the leaf keeps the stone from looking like an engagement ring. It is a more interesting result than either half would manage alone.
The leaf is broad and gently curved, with fine veining worked into its surface so it catches light along its length rather than flashing. The solitaire is a round brilliant-cut stone held in slim claws and set high, which is what lets light enter from the sides and gives it real brightness. Both bands are kept fine, and the whole piece weighs around four grams.
Wear it on the ring or middle finger and keep the neighbouring fingers bare or in plain hairline bands — the piece supplies its own layering. It is understated enough for the office and bright enough for an evening, which is a genuinely useful combination in a small collection. It also looks well worn turned slightly, so the leaf faces outward.
The open band adjusts to most fingers, which removes the main risk in buying a ring for someone else. The design has a stone without being a formal solitaire, so it carries no unintended message — useful if you are buying for a friend, a sister or a daughter.
Claw settings are delicate and fine bands are thin, so there is very little metal here doing a great deal of work. On ordinary plated jewellery the claws dull first and the stone stops looking bright because the metal around it has gone grey. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here keep the setting as clean as the stone.
The open wrap makes the ring adjustable across most finger sizes. Open and close it gently rather than forcing it, and avoid flexing it repeatedly.
Brush gently around the claws with a dry soft brush, and check occasionally that the stone sits firm. Put the ring on after perfume and lotion. Store it in its pouch, and take it off before swimming, bathing and housework.
