A single fine wire wraps twice around the finger and finishes at two points — a butterfly with pierced, filigree-worked wings on one side, a round brilliant-cut stone raised in claws on the other. Worn, it looks like two delicate rings that happen to belong together.
The butterfly is a difficult motif in jewellery because it goes wrong so easily: too large and it looks childish, too flat and it looks like a sticker. This one is small, and its wings are pierced rather than solid, which is what saves it. The openwork lets skin show through the wing panels, so the shape stays light and detailed instead of sitting on the finger as a solid lump of gold.
Each wing carries a fine pierced pattern with a textured border, and the body is drawn as a slim ridged line between them. At the opposite end, the solitaire is set high in slim claws so that light enters from the sides — that side light is what makes a clear stone bright, and it is why a high setting is worth the small extra care it needs. Both bands are very fine, and the complete ring weighs around four grams.
Wear it on the ring or middle finger with the rest of the hand plain. The piece layers itself, so there is nothing to add. It is light and pretty without being juvenile, which makes it a popular gift across a wide age range. Turn it so the butterfly faces outward for everyday wear, or so the stone leads for an evening.
An adjustable open band removes the single biggest risk in gifting a ring. Combined with a motif that is almost universally liked and a stone that adds brightness without formality, this is among the easiest pieces in the collection to buy for someone else.
Pierced filigree has an enormous amount of edge for its size, and claw settings are fine and exposed. Both dull quickly under ordinary plating, and once the wing piercing greys the pattern stops reading at arm's length. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here keep the filigree crisp and the claws bright.
The open wrap construction makes the ring adjustable across most finger sizes. Open and close it gently with finger pressure, and avoid flexing it repeatedly.
Use a dry soft brush on the pierced wings and around the claws, and check occasionally that the stone sits firm. Put the ring on after perfume and lotion. Store it in its pouch, and remove it before swimming, bathing and housework.
