This band is cut through rather than cut into. A repeating pattern of small shapes is pierced clean through the metal, so the skin shows in the gaps and the ring carries a dark-and-bright rhythm that an engraved band cannot produce.
Cutwork is the technique behind jaali screens, chikankari and the pierced borders of old Indian silverwork, and it exists because an opening is more interesting than a line. On this ring the effect is immediate: against skin the pierced shapes read dark, so the pattern is legible from a distance in a way that engraving never is at this scale. In strong light the openings throw small bright shapes onto the finger beneath.
The piercing runs as a continuous band around the ring, framed top and bottom by plain polished borders that hold the structure rigid and give the pattern a clean edge. The cut edges are deburred and smoothed, which is the detail that separates proper cutwork from a stamped imitation — unfinished piercing feels sharp against the next finger. Removing all that metal also keeps the ring light, at around four grams, and lets air reach the skin, which makes it noticeably more comfortable than a solid band in hot weather.
It works alone and it stacks well, since the plain borders give neighbouring rings a smooth surface to sit against. It suits everyday dressing and office wear, and it has a particular affinity with cutwork and chikankari fabrics, where the ring quietly echoes the clothing. Equally good with plain cotton, where it supplies the only pattern.
Every pierced opening doubles the exposed surface, since the inside of each cut is metal too. On an ordinary plated ring those cut faces are the first to dull, and once they do the pattern loses its contrast and the band looks merely rough. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here cover the cut faces as well as the outer surface.
The ring is made with an adjustable fit for most finger sizes. The smoothed cut edges and the plain borders make it comfortable for long wear and for stacking.
Use a dry soft brush and work it through the openings from both sides. Put the ring on after hand cream. Store it in its pouch, and remove it before swimming, bathing and washing up.

An adjustable band is a tapered strip coiled so the ends overlap, rather than a closed circle. It fits a range of fingers, which makes it an easy gift, but it is worth knowing how to treat it: open and close it off the hand, with both thumbs, in small movements. Forcing it on and off at the finger is what eventually fatigues the metal at the overlap.
Costume jewellery earns its place by letting you wear a shape you would never commission in precious metal. The designs here come out of a tradition centuries old; the materials do not pretend to, and we do not describe them as though they did.
