A scallop shell, fanned open, with deep flutes radiating from a narrow hinge out to a scalloped rim. It is one of the most satisfying shapes in nature to render in metal, because the ridges do all the work — they catch light along every edge and throw shadow into every valley, so the piece is never flat no matter how the hand turns.
Most ring faces present one surface and one reflection. A fluted shell presents a dozen. Turn your hand even slightly and the bright lines travel across the fan, which gives the ring a liveliness that a smooth face cannot match. It is the same reason fluted columns and pleated fabric hold the eye — repetition with depth.
The flutes are deep and evenly spaced, narrowing as they converge towards the hinge so the fan looks properly drawn rather than merely stamped. The rim is scalloped to follow the ridges, which is the detail that makes the shell read as a shell rather than as an abstract fan. The whole face is polished bright, so the ridge lines stay crisp. Underneath, the shank narrows to keep the weight down to around four grams and to stop the face from tipping.
Wear it alone on the index or middle finger. The fan is wide enough to be the only ring on that hand, and the ridges are busy enough that any neighbour competes. It carries a summery, coastal feeling that works beautifully with linen, white cotton and pastel, and it also holds its own against silk because the shape is strong. Pair it with plain hoops rather than anything ornate.
Fluting is a succession of deep narrow valleys, and valleys are where plating fails. On ordinary fashion jewellery the valleys darken first while the ridges stay bright, which sounds attractive but in practice just makes the piece look dirty, and before long the contrast that gave the shell its depth is gone. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here keep the valleys as warm as the ridges.
The ring is made with an adjustable fit for most finger sizes. The scalloped rim is rounded rather than sharp, and the narrow shank keeps the shell balanced on top of the finger.
Run a dry soft brush along the flutes, following their direction rather than across them. Put the ring on after perfume and hand cream. Store it in its pouch, and remove it before swimming, bathing and kitchen work.
