Two spirals, coiled in opposite directions and meeting at the centre, make up the whole of this ring's face. It is one of the oldest decorative forms there is, found in metalwork across the world long before anyone wrote any of it down, and it still looks modern because a spiral never really dates.
Traditional filigree builds its patterns from many fine wires soldered together, which is beautiful and fragile in equal measure. This design keeps the visual language of filigree — curved line, open space, symmetry — but builds it from a single continuous band of metal shaped into two generous coils. There is nothing to break because there is almost nothing joined.
The coils are formed from flattened wire with a softly rounded profile and a polished highlight running along the outer face, so each curve carries its own line of light. The two spirals are mirrored, which keeps the face balanced and stops it from looking like it is drifting to one side. Underneath, the shank narrows to a plain band so that all the visual weight stays on top. The piece weighs about four grams.
Give it the index or middle finger and leave the neighbouring fingers bare. The scrollwork has enough movement in it that any second ring nearby starts to compete. It belongs with festive and traditional dressing — silk, cotton handloom, anything with woven borders — and it sits particularly well with oxidised or temple-style earrings, where the two different metal languages play off each other.
Spirals are mostly edges, and edges are where plating thins first. On ordinary fashion jewellery the raised curves go dull and the recesses go grey, which collapses the whole pattern into a single flat shape. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating on this ring keep the curves distinct, so the design continues to read as a scroll rather than a blur.
The ring is made with an adjustable fit that settles on most finger sizes. The coils are smoothed all round with no wire ends exposed, so there is nothing to scratch or catch when you put the ring on or take it off.
Clean it with a dry soft brush, which gets into the coils where a cloth cannot. Put the ring on after perfume, lotion and hair products. Store it in its pouch away from humidity, and take it off for swimming, bathing and any heavy work with the hands.
