A thick curve of polished gold wraps the finger and stops short, leaving a clear gap between two blunt rounded ends. It is essentially a cuff shrunk to ring size, and like a good cuff its appeal is entirely in the proportion of metal to gap.
Close this ring into a circle and it becomes an ordinary chunky band. Leave it open and it becomes something else: the eye registers the break, follows the curve round, and the piece reads as modern and deliberate rather than traditional. The two ends are swollen slightly thicker than the middle of the curve, which keeps the opening from looking like an accident or a manufacturing fault.
The body is substantial — this is a chunky style — with a smoothly rounded profile and a bright mirror polish across the whole surface. Both ends are domed rather than cut flat, so there is no edge anywhere on the ring. There is no texture, no setting and no motif, which puts all the weight on the quality of the curve and the finish. Despite the heavy appearance the band is formed rather than solid, so it weighs around four grams.
This is a modern, casual piece. It is excellent with jeans, linen, knitwear and tailoring, and it pairs naturally with other smooth organic shapes — a dome ring, a plain cuff bracelet — rather than with ornate or stone-set jewellery. Two on adjacent fingers looks considered. It also sits comfortably next to a watch, since there is nothing on it to scratch a strap.
With no texture and no ornament, this design is nothing but surface. Every cloud, haze and dull patch shows immediately, and there is no detail to distract from it. That makes the plating more important here than on almost any other piece in the range. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here are what let a completely plain shape stay convincing.
The open crescent is one of the easiest shapes to wear: the gap means it slips on from the side rather than over the knuckle, and the domed ends mean nothing presses in. It adjusts across most finger sizes by gently widening or closing the gap, though like any open band it should not be flexed repeatedly without reason.
A dry soft cloth is all it needs, and it genuinely reaches every surface. Put the ring on after hand cream. Store it in its pouch so the polish is not scratched by other jewellery, and remove it before swimming and bathing.
