A cluster ring works on a simple principle: several small stones set close together throw more light than one larger stone of the same total size, because every stone adds its own edges and its own angles. This design arranges a group of round bezel-set stones into a soft open flower, framed by textured gold.
Indian festive jewellery often achieves its richness through sheer mass, which is lovely to look at and tiring to wear. This ring takes the opposite route. The cluster covers a good spread of the finger and reads as genuinely ornamental from across a room, but the construction underneath is open and the whole piece weighs around four grams. You can wear it through a full evening of Diwali visits without once wanting to take it off.
Each stone sits in its own closed bezel, with the metal rim folded over the stone's edge. That is slower to make than a prong setting and far more durable, which matters on a cluster where a single lost stone ruins the symmetry. Between the bezels the gold is lightly textured, so the metal itself contributes a soft glow rather than sitting flat and dull against the stones. The stones are graded in size, larger towards the centre, which is what gives the cluster its flower-like form.
Wear it on the ring or middle finger with the rest of the hand kept simple. It pairs naturally with jhumkas or any drop earring, and it suits silk, brocade and anything with gold work in the weave. With plain western clothing it becomes an unexpected focal point, which is a look worth trying before deciding it is only a festival ring.
Cluster rings have an enormous amount of surface tucked between and beneath the stones, and that is precisely where ordinary plating dulls first. Once the metal between the stones goes grey, the whole piece looks tired no matter how bright the stones remain. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here keep that recessed metal looking as warm as the rest.
The ring is made with an adjustable fit for most finger sizes. The bezels sit low and their rims are rounded, so the cluster does not catch on fabric the way a prong-set cluster does.
Use a dry soft brush around and between the stones. Never use toothpaste, bleach or ultrasonic cleaners on plated jewellery. Put the ring on after perfume and hair products, store it in its pouch, and remove it before swimming, bathing and cooking.
