A row of looped petals, each outlined in tiny raised beads, opens outward across the finger into a fan — the palmette, the stylised leaf form that runs through Indian, Persian and Mughal ornament and turns up on everything from temple walls to paisley borders.
Each petal is a loop rather than a solid shape, so the fan is almost entirely outline. The skin shows through every opening, which keeps a design of this width feeling light instead of plated onto the hand, and it lets the beaded edges catch light from both the front and the back. Fully solid, this shape would be heavy and rather flat; as openwork it has air in it.
The petals graduate in height, tallest at the centre and shorter towards the edges, which gives the fan its proper shape rather than a flat row. Every loop is edged in granulation — rows of minute beads — so the whole outline glitters softly without a single stone. Where the loops meet the band they are gathered into a narrow neck, which is the detail that makes the fan look like it is growing from the ring rather than sitting on it. Weight is around four grams.
Wear it alone on the middle or index finger with the rest of the hand plain. It is a festive and occasion ring, well suited to pujas, weddings and family functions, and it belongs with silk, brocade and handloom. It pairs especially well with jhumkas or any drop earring that shares the same beaded language, and it looks striking against plain modern clothing where its traditional outline stands out.
Beaded openwork is the worst case for a plated finish: every bead has hollows around it, every loop has an inner face as well as an outer one, and because the design is open you see the far side through the gaps. On ordinary fashion jewellery the inner faces go dark within weeks and the fan loses all of its sparkle. The stainless steel core and anti-tarnish gold plating used here cover the whole structure evenly.
The ring is made with an adjustable fit for most finger sizes. The loops are rounded with no open wire ends, and the fan is wide rather than tall, so it sits comfortably and does not snag badly.
Use a dry soft brush and work it through the loops from both sides. Never use toothpaste or an ultrasonic cleaner. Put the ring on after perfume and hair products, store it in its pouch, and remove it before swimming, bathing and cooking.
