Two-tone jewellery solves a common problem: it goes with everything, because it already contains both metals. This pair uses that to good effect. An open oval frame is finished in warm gold on the outer edge and antique silver on the inner detail, and inside the frame sits a small perched bird rendered in fine relief. Coloured stones mark the top of the frame and the base of the oval, adding a point of colour without turning the design into a stone piece. It is a light, graphic earring that gets noticed without being large.
The contrast between the two finishes is what carries the design. The gold outer band is polished and bright, while the silver interior is oxidised and darker, so the bird motif stands clear against its background instead of disappearing into it. The oval is open rather than filled, which keeps the weight down to around twenty grams for the pair and lets skin or fabric show through the middle. Above the oval a small stone-set cap forms the join to the ear wire, and a matching stone sits in the lower curve of the frame, closing the shape visually.
The advantage of a two-tone piece is that you do not have to commit to a metal for the rest of the look. Wear these with gold bangles or with silver, and they will sit correctly with either. They work well for evening events, where the polished gold edge catches artificial light, and they are equally at home with a plain black dress or a printed kurta. Keep your hair off the face so the open oval reads as a shape, since that outline is the strongest part of the design.
Parties, evening dinners, sangeet functions, office celebrations and gifting. The bird motif gives the pair a lighter, less formal mood than most traditional designs.
Two-tone plating needs the same care as any plated finish, with one extra consideration: never polish it with an abrasive cloth, because rubbing will blur the boundary between the gold and silver sections. Keep the earrings dry, put them on after perfume and hair spray, and remove them before bathing or sleeping. Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wear and store them in a pouch away from other metal. Chemical dips should be avoided entirely, since they attack the two finishes at different rates and leave the contrast looking uneven.
