A small hexagonal stone sits at the lobe, a tiny round one links it to a larger teardrop below, and both main stones are framed in a border of fine gold granulation. Available in Black, Yellow, Mint, Baby Pink, Red, Blue and Aqua.
The granulated border — a ring of tiny gold beads applied by hand — is one of the oldest decorative techniques in Indian goldsmithing. Putting it around a hexagonal stone rather than a round one is the interesting move: the traditional border has to turn six corners instead of following a smooth curve, and the result is a piece that reads as both heritage and contemporary at once.
Both stones are smooth cabochons set in bezels, with the granulation applied around the outside of each bezel as a separate decorative ring. The upper stone is a flat hexagon, the lower a generous teardrop with its point downward. A small round stone between them acts as the link and keeps the two main elements from touching. The teardrop swings slightly below the fixed upper section.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
Black is the strongest against the gold granulation. Red and Green-adjacent tones are the most traditional. Yellow sits closest to the metal. Mint, Baby Pink, Aqua and Blue are the soft options and show the Monalisa glow most clearly.
Hair up or tucked back. These suit silk, cotton and handloom, and the granulation means they sit comfortably alongside temple or kundan pieces. They are mid-length — long enough to be noticed, short enough not to need a clear neckline.
Weddings, festivals, daytime functions and evenings.
Moderate and well balanced. The stones are thin cabochons rather than solid, and the weight sits low where the earring hangs cleanly.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
