Two parrots perch facing each other at the top of each earring, their bodies engraved with feather lines and their tails curving down along the sides of a smooth silver bell. Below, a dense fringe of small white pearls closes the rim.
Available in Silver — the oxidised antique finish with a white pearl fringe.
Putting the birds at the top and leaving the bell completely plain is the right decision, and it is what makes these work. All the detail sits where it will be seen at eye level, and the smooth dome beneath gives that detail room to breathe. A patterned bell underneath a pair of engraved parrots would have been too much.
The tails are the nice touch — rather than sitting entirely above the bell, they sweep down along its shoulders, linking the two halves of the earring so it reads as one object rather than a bird sitting on top of a bell.
Each bird is modelled in profile with a curved beak, a raised crest and fine engraved lines running along body and tail to suggest feathers. Parrots are among the oldest motifs in Indian silver, associated with love and with carried messages, and they appear on everything from anklets to hair ornaments.
Smooth, evenly domed and undecorated, with a simple banded edge. Because the surface is unbroken, it catches light as a single soft curve, which sets off the pearls below and the detail above.
Post fitting, hollow bell, moderate size. Light enough for daily wear, detailed enough for a festival — one of the more versatile pairs in the silver range.
Cotton kurtas, handloom sarees, plain linen. Black, white, indigo and mustard all show the silhouette clearly. Tie your hair back so the parrots are visible, and keep other jewellery to plain oxidised silver.
On any hanging earring, the part nearest the lobe is seen most and seen closest. It sits at eye level when someone is talking to you, it stays visible when hair is partly down, and it is the section a photograph is most likely to catch in focus. Designs that put their best work at the bottom of a long drop are working against all of that. Here the parrots are at the top and the bell beneath is left plain, which is the right way round. It is a small decision, but it is why this pair reads clearly from across a room while more elaborate earrings sometimes turn into an indistinct shape.
Store them in a zip lock pouch so the pearl fringe does not tangle. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and keep them away from water.
