Three round Monalisa stones are arranged in a loose curving line, each one surrounded by a halo of small round pearls, with the arc leaning slightly so the earring is not symmetrical. Available in Black, Aqua, Blue and Mint.
Halo settings — a stone ringed by smaller ones — are usually used once per earring, on a single centre stone. Repeating the device three times and arranging the results in a curve turns a familiar setting into a composition. Because each halo is complete in itself, the earring reads as three small objects clustered together rather than one large decorated shape, which keeps it from feeling heavy despite covering a reasonable area.
Each stone is a smooth round cabochon in a bezel, with the pearls set individually in a complete ring around it. The three are different sizes — the largest at the bottom of the arc — and the clusters overlap slightly where they meet, so the pearl rings interlock rather than sitting apart. The arc curves rather than running straight, which is what gives the pair their mirrored, organic quality.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
Black is the strongest contrast against the pale pearls. Blue is the deepest of the coloured options. Aqua and Mint are the softest and read almost as pastels against the gold and pearl.
These are pretty rather than bold, and they suit cotton, chiffon and anything light. The pearls mean they sit comfortably with a pearl necklace. Hair up or down works since the cluster is broad rather than long. Good for daytime events where heavy jewellery would be too much.
Daily wear, office, daytime functions and small gatherings.
Light. The stones are thin cabochons and the pearls are tiny, so despite three clusters the total weight stays low and nothing hangs far below the lobe.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
