A small decorated top, a wide bell-shaped dome worked in enamel and kundan, and a fringe of pearls around the rim. This is the jhumka in its classic temple form, scaled for wearing rather than for display. Available in Green, Pink, White, Baby Pink, Mint and Red.
The jhumka is the oldest earring form in the subcontinent and has barely changed, because the dome does something no flat earring can: it collects light inside its curve and throws it back out, so the earring glows from within rather than only reflecting off its surface. Add a fringe around the rim and that glow moves constantly as you do. Four thousand years of continuous production is a reasonable endorsement of the design.
The dome is divided into panels, each filled with enamel in the chosen colourway and separated by raised gold ribs, with small stones set at the junctions. Around the lower rim sits a ring of gold beadwork from which the pearls hang on individual links. The top is a compact decorated stud, deliberately small so the dome below reads as the main event and the earring does not sit too low on the lobe. Warm gold finish throughout.
Green and Red are the traditional festive pairings and the ones most often worn with silk. White and Baby Pink are the softest and suit daytime functions and pastel dressing. Mint and Pink sit between the two. The gold framework is identical across all six, so the choice is purely about the enamel panels.
Jhumkas want hair off the face — up, or at least tucked firmly behind the ear — because the whole value of the shape is in seeing the dome and the fringe move. They suit cotton, silk and handloom equally. Keep the necklace simple; a jhumka of this size already occupies the space below the jaw.
Festivals, pujas, Navratri, Diwali, weddings and family functions. Also perfectly wearable with an everyday kurta, which is more than most festive earrings manage.
Moderate weight. The dome is hollow, which is what keeps a jhumka wearable at this size, and the pearl fringe is light. Comfortable for a full evening.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation rather than before — cosmetics are harder on plating than anything else. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
