A small floral stud sits at the lobe, below it a wide rosette of pointed gold petals radiating from a dark cabochon, and beneath that a small bell with a pearl fringe.
Almost every long earring gets wider as it goes down, finishing with the bell as the broadest point. This one breaks that rule — the rosette in the middle is the widest element and the bell below it is small, so the silhouette bulges and then narrows. The effect is that the earring reads as a flower with a drop hanging from it rather than as a jhumka with decoration above, which is a genuinely different composition from the rest of the collection.
The petals are individually cut, pointed and slightly dished, radiating evenly from a raised central bezel that holds a dark stone. Because each petal is a separate piece of worked sheet rather than part of a stamped disc, they catch light at slightly different angles and the rosette never flattens out. The dark stone at the centre gives the eye somewhere to settle in the middle of all that radiating gold.
Hair fully up — the rosette is the point of the design and needs to be seen whole. The dark centre makes these easier to pair than a coloured stone would: they go with black, maroon, bottle green and navy as readily as with gold and ivory. No necklace, or something very flat.
Festivals, weddings, receptions, pujas and evening functions.
Moderate. The rosette is cut sheet rather than solid, and the small bell keeps the bottom weight low.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush between the pearl drops and inside the bell, where a cloth cannot reach. Hang or lay them flat in a pouch so the fringe is not crushed, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
