Three elements in a column: a small fluted finial at the lobe, a rectangular Monalisa stone beneath it, and at the base a large disc worked in radiating lines like a sunflower head with a domed centre. Available in Green, Red, Grey, Yellow, Black, Mint, Blue, Aqua and Baby Pink.
A plain disc of this size would be a slab of gold — heavy-looking and dull. Working it into radiating ridges from a raised centre breaks the surface into dozens of narrow facets that each catch light at a different angle, so the disc shimmers as the head turns rather than flashing once. It is the same reason a sunflower head reads as alive while a plain circle does not.
The finial at the top is fluted vertically, a small echo of the texture used on the disc below. The rectangular stone between them is bezel-set and deliberately flat and plain, giving the eye a moment of calm between two textured elements. The disc is the largest part of the earring, with its ridges radiating from a smooth domed centre that catches a single bright highlight. The sections are linked so the disc swings.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
The stone is the only colour and it sits between two gold elements, so it reads as a deliberate accent. Black and Grey are the most graphic. Red and Green are the deepest. Mint, Aqua, Baby Pink, Blue and Yellow are the softer options.
Hair up, neck bare or a thin chain. These suit both silk and modern clothing, and the sunburst motif carries enough traditional feeling to work at a festival while the clean geometry keeps them wearable with a plain dress.
Parties, festivals, evenings and daytime functions.
Moderate but well balanced. The disc is pressed rather than solid, so it weighs much less than its size suggests, and the weight sits low where it hangs cleanly.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
