A round Monalisa stone sits at the lobe, and from it a long slim stem descends with flat gold leaves set along one side only, angled downward like a sprig. Available in Grey, Green, Blue, Mint, Yellow, Aqua, Black and Baby Pink.
Setting the leaves along a single side of the stem rather than in opposite pairs is what makes this read as a real sprig rather than a diagram. Nature is rarely symmetrical, and the slight visual lean it produces means the two earrings in the pair mirror each other, which is more interesting to look at than two identical objects.
The stem is plain, rigid and narrow, so it holds its line and the leaves stay where they are set. Each leaf is cut from flat sheet, pointed at the tip, and angled slightly away from the stem so the row catches light in a sequence rather than as one plane. The stone at the top is a smooth cabochon in a plain bezel, deliberately the only non-botanical element. Nothing swings.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
The stone is the only colour. Black and Grey are the most contemporary. Green is the obvious match for a leaf motif. Blue, Mint, Aqua, Yellow and Baby Pink are the softer options.
Hair up to show the full length. These are narrow enough not to interfere with a dupatta or a collar, and the botanical subject works with both Indian and western clothing. No necklace — the stem occupies the vertical space a pendant would use.
Parties, office, evenings and daily wear.
Very light. A thin stem, flat leaves and one small stone add up to almost nothing, and nothing projects far enough sideways to catch.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
