A square stone-set top, and below it a crescent built from filigree scrollwork and studded all over with small coloured stones, finishing in a few pearl drops at the lower rim. Available in Black, Yellow, Green, White and Baby Pink.
Many chandbalis place stones only around the border and leave the centre open. Studding the entire face changes the character considerably — from a distance the crescent reads as a block of solid colour rather than as gold with coloured edges, and under artificial light it holds far more brightness. It is the more dressed-up of the two approaches and the better choice for an evening.
The filigree framework underneath is what makes the weight manageable: the crescent is scrollwork rather than solid sheet, so a great deal of metal is absent even though the surface appears continuous. Each small stone sits in its own raised bezel across the face. The square top is stone-set to match and sized to keep the attachment point neat. Two or three pearl drops hang from the lower rim rather than a full fringe, which keeps the silhouette of the crescent clean.
Black is the most striking against gold and the most modern. Green is the traditional choice. Yellow is the warmest and sits closest to the metal. White and Baby Pink are soft and best for daytime.
Hair up, neck bare or a fine chain. These suit silk, georgette and anything with some formality, and the dense stone work means they read well under indoor evening lighting where subtler earrings disappear. Keep other jewellery minimal.
Parties, receptions, festive evenings and weddings as a guest.
Moderate. The filigree construction removes a lot of metal, so these are lighter than fully solid stone-set chandbalis of the same size, though they are still an occasion earring rather than an everyday one.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
