A small fluted dome sits at the lobe, and below it hangs a round silver disc with an eight pointed star cut clean through the middle. Behind the cutout sits a coloured stone, so the star reads as colour against silver.
Available in 7 colours: Sky Blue, Green, Yellow, White, Baby Pink, Blood Red and Sea Green. The colour refers to the stone showing through the star cutout.
Using a cutout to show colour, rather than setting a stone on top of the metal, is an unusual approach and it produces a distinctly different effect. The colour appears to come from inside the earring rather than sitting on its surface, and the sharp silver edges of the star stay crisp against it.
It also means the coloured area is a shape rather than a stone. You read a star first and the colour second, which is the reverse of how most stone jewellery works.
Edged with a rope-twisted silver border that frames the flat face and gives the circle a defined outline. The surface between the border and the star is left plain, so nothing competes with the cutout.
A small ribbed dome at the lobe, echoing the shapes used on temple bells. It lifts the disc slightly away from the ear so the piece hangs clear rather than lying flat.
Post fitting, compact, light. The disc hangs just below the lobe and barely moves, which makes these practical for daily wear and easy under a phone or a scarf.
They read as geometric rather than traditional, so they work with western clothes as readily as with a kurta. Plain fabrics show the star shape most clearly. Sky Blue and Yellow are the brightest, White the most neutral, Blood Red the most traditional. Hair up or down both work.
There are two ways to put colour into a metal earring. The usual one is to set a stone on top of the surface, where it sits proud of the metal and catches light directly. The other is to cut a shape through the metal and place the colour behind it, so the colour is seen through an opening. The second method is less common because it requires precise cutting, but the effect is quite different: the colour appears contained within the piece rather than applied to it, and the metal edges stay crisp and unbroken around it. It is why a cutout design reads as graphic where a stone set one reads as decorative.
Keep them in a zip lock pouch, put them on after perfume, wipe with a dry soft cloth and keep them away from water.
