A square cabochon sits below a wire-wrapped hook, and beneath it a larger round cabochon of the same stone hangs on a short link. Two shapes, one material, no other decoration. Available in Aqua and Yellow.
Using one stone in two different cuts is a quieter idea than mixing materials and it produces a more coherent earring. The square reads as crisp and modern, the round as soft and traditional, and because they share a colour and a surface the eye accepts them as belonging together. The contrast is in geometry alone, which is a more sophisticated effect than contrast in colour.
Both stones are smooth cabochons in plain bezels with no claws or beading. The square sits flat with its edges parallel to the hook; the round below is slightly larger and hangs on a short link so it swings independently. The ear wire is finished with a few turns of fine wire where it meets the setting, a small detail that gives the plain hook a point of interest.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
Aqua is the cooler and clearer of the two, with the Monalisa glow very visible in daylight. Yellow is warmer and sits closer to the gold, making the earring read as more tonal and less contrasting. Only two options here, so the choice is simple.
These are easy and informal. They suit shirts, cotton kurtas, linen and summer dressing, and the hook makes them sit a little lower than a post, which shows both stones clearly. Hair up or tucked back. Any necklace works.
Casual wear, office, daytime outings and travel.
Light. Two thin cabochons and a fine hook weigh almost nothing, and the lower stone swings freely without knocking.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
