A fine curved stem follows the line of the ear, carrying a few small narrow leaves along its length, with a round cabochon set at the upper tip rather than at the lobe. Available in a range of eight shades.
Most climbers put their stone at the lobe where the eye starts. Placing it at the upper tip instead reverses the reading — the eye follows the stem upward and finishes on the stone, so the whole piece appears to be growing towards a point rather than hanging from one. It also means the brightest element sits high on the ear, which is far more noticeable in profile.
The stem is finer than on the heavier vine climbers, and the leaves are correspondingly small and narrow, set in alternating pairs rather than clustered. The stone at the tip is a modest round cabochon in a plain bezel. Everything about the piece is scaled down, which is what makes it the lightest climber here and the easiest to wear for long periods.
The lower end passes through the lobe piercing and the curve rises along the ear, held by its shape. No second piercing or clip is needed. Ease it in gently and let the curve settle rather than forcing it.
Hair up with the ear exposed. Because this version is slim rather than bold, it works for daytime and for the office in a way the heavier climbers do not, while still reading as something out of the ordinary. Wear as a pair or singly.
Parties, office, daytime functions and daily wear.
The lightest climber in the range. A fine stem, small leaves and one small stone, with the weight distributed along the curve.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around any stone settings or textured areas. Store them flat in a pouch so the shape is kept, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
Type: Curved ear climber. Metal: Brass. Finish: Gold-tone plating. Work: Fine curved stem with small alternating leaves and a bezel-set cabochon at the tip. Closure: Pin through lobe, held by the curve.
