A calm, symmetrical face looks straight out from each earring, crowned by a broad headdress of radiating points, with a horizontal bar below carrying a short fringe of small ghungroo bells.
Available in Silver — the oxidised antique finish, stoneless.
Devotional faces are among the most recognisable forms in Indian silver, and they are difficult to make well. The features have to be simple enough to read at small scale but not so simple that the expression is lost. Here the eyes, brows and mouth are cut cleanly and kept symmetrical, which gives the face the still, composed quality these pieces are supposed to have.
The radiating crown does the structural work, spreading the top of the earring wide and catching light along each point, so the piece has presence well beyond the size of the face itself.
These are a natural choice for Navratri and Durga Puja, and for temple visits, where the imagery is entirely at home. Many people wear them through the festival period and keep them for those occasions rather than in everyday rotation, which is a matter of personal preference rather than rule.
A row of small solid ghungroo bells hangs from the bar beneath the face. They chime very softly when you move and give the lower edge of the earring some motion against an otherwise static design.
A hook fitting carries the earring, which sits close to the ear rather than hanging long. The construction is light and there is no large drop, so they are comfortable through a long day of festival wear.
Traditional dressing suits them best — a cotton or silk saree, a plain kurta in red, white, yellow or black. Tie your hair back so the crown is fully visible, since it is the part that gives the earring its scale. Keep other jewellery in plain oxidised silver.
Jewellery carrying religious imagery occupies a particular place, and people treat it differently. Some wear devotional pieces only during the relevant festival or for temple visits, keeping them apart from everyday jewellery. Others wear them year round without hesitation. Neither approach is more correct, and there is no rule requiring one over the other, but it is worth deciding which you are comfortable with before buying, because a piece kept for a single festival week will see far less use than one in regular rotation. These are well suited to either.
Keep them in a zip lock pouch between wears. Put them on after perfume, wipe with a dry soft cloth and keep them away from water.
