A single curving stem of gold descends in an S, and three smooth cabochon stones are set along it — one near the top, one at the turn, one at the base. Nothing about the arrangement is symmetrical and the two earrings in the pair mirror rather than repeat each other.
The whole design is one continuous curve, which is considerably harder to make than an assembly of parts and gives a completely different result. The eye follows the stem from top to bottom, pausing at each stone, and because the curve reverses direction halfway down, the earring appears to move even when it is still. A straight drop with three stones on it would be a far duller object.
The stem is round in section and polished smooth, tapering slightly as it descends. The stones are flat-backed cabochons in a soft translucent tone, each held in a plain bezel with no claws, set at the outside of each curve so they sit where the eye naturally travels. There is no texture, no engraving and no fringe — the form is the entire design, which is why the proportions had to be right.
Plain clothing and hair up. This is a contemporary piece and it reads best against solid colour, where the silhouette of the vine is legible. It suits western dressing particularly well, and works with a plain kurta, but it would be lost against heavy traditional work. Skip the necklace.
Parties, evenings, gallery openings and occasions where the jewellery is meant to be looked at rather than merely worn.
Light for the length. The stem is fine wire and the stones are small and flat-backed, so there is very little mass, and the earring hangs close to the neck rather than swinging outward.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
