Most jhumkas keep their top small. These do the opposite. A wide fan of petal cut stones spreads across the lobe — deep ruby in the outer row, green through the centre — so the earring reads as a flower first and a bell second.
Available in Red Green — ruby red and emerald green petals against antique gold, the traditional temple pairing.
The wide petal top solves a common problem with jhumkas: they can look like a bell hanging from nothing. Here the top is the design, and the bell is the finish. The result covers more of the lobe, frames the face better, and gives the earring a more deliberate shape than a plain stud and dome.
Each petal is a long, pointed stone seated individually in a gold bed, and the petals are arranged in two staggered rows. Because they sit at slightly different angles, the stones catch light at different moments as you move, which gives the top a shifting, layered look rather than a flat block of colour.
The bell below is compact and covered in fine gold granulation, with a band of small stones marking its upper edge. Keeping the bell restrained is the right call — with a top this elaborate, a large dome would make the earring unwieldy and heavy.
Two staggered rows of small gold beads hang around the rim. The double row gives a fuller, softer edge than a single line and keeps the bottom of the earring moving continuously in the light.
These sit well with both silk and cotton, which makes them more versatile than heavier bridal jhumkas. Wear them with a temple border saree for a function, or with a plain solid kurta when you want one strong traditional piece and nothing else. The wide top means they show clearly even with hair partly down, though tying it back always helps. Keep your necklace short or skip it.
The petal fan at the top is a lotus, and it is one of the oldest motifs in Indian jewellery. It appears in temple carving, in textile borders and in bridal ornament, usually as a symbol of purity and new beginnings, which is why it turns up so often in wedding pieces. Practically, it also happens to be a very good shape for an earring top: it is wider than it is tall, so it sits across the lobe and frames the face instead of adding length. That is why a lotus top makes a jhumka feel balanced even when the bell below is small.
Keep them in a zip lock pouch so the fringe does not tangle. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and keep them away from water and damp storage.
