A quatrefoil — a four-lobed shape built from four overlapping circles — filled with closely set uncut-style kundan stones and bordered by an ornate scalloped gold frame. It sits flat against the lobe.
The four-lobed form appears across Mughal architecture, in jaali screens, tile work and inlaid marble, and it carries that association immediately. It is also a genuinely good shape for a stud: the four lobes give the outline interest at every edge, so the earring reads as decorative from any angle, whereas a circle or a square presents the same profile however the head turns.
Each stone is set in its own gold bezel and pressed into place in the traditional kundan manner, with the stones packed close enough that very little metal shows between them. The outer frame is scalloped and worked with fine detail, framing the stone field and giving the quatrefoil a defined edge. The back is flat with a centred post so the earring sits straight rather than tipping under the weight of the stones.
These are the traditional option in a small format — real kundan work, bridal in character, but compact enough to wear with an everyday kurta. They sit flat so they work with loose hair, under a dupatta and with any necklace. A good choice when the rest of your outfit is already heavy and a drop earring would be too much.
Festivals, pujas, weddings, daytime functions and everyday traditional wear.
Good. The stones add some weight compared with a plain stud, but nothing hangs and the flat back distributes the load evenly on the lobe.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
