A long slim bar hangs from the lobe, three pointed gold petals open outward from one side of it near the middle, and a teardrop Monalisa stone sits at the base. Available in Green, Blue, Mint, Aqua, Red, Baby Pink, Grey, Black and Yellow.
The bar reads as a stem and the petals as growth from it, which is a very different feeling from a drop earring where elements simply hang one below the next. Placing the petals to one side rather than symmetrically around the bar reinforces that — real plants do not grow evenly — and it is what gives the earring its slight lean and its sense of being alive.
The bar is plain, rigid and round in section, so it holds its line and the petals keep their position. Each petal is cut from flat sheet, pointed at the tip and set at a slightly different angle so they catch light separately. The Monalisa teardrop at the base is bezel-set with a narrow rim, and because it sits at the very bottom it acts as a visual weight that stops the eye travelling off the end of the bar.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
The stone is the only colour. Black and Grey are the most modern. Green and Red are the deepest. Mint, Aqua, Baby Pink, Blue and Yellow are soft, and the pale shades show the Monalisa glow best.
Hair up to show the full length. These suit both modern and traditional dressing because a plant form belongs to neither. Keep the necklace off — a long vertical earring and a pendant occupy the same space.
Festivals, parties, office and daily wear.
Very light. A thin bar, flat petals and one small stone add up to almost nothing, and nothing projects sideways to catch on a collar.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
