A kaan chain takes the weight of a heavy earring off the lobe and passes it to the ear or the hair, which is why traditional bridal jewellery uses them. Here the chain is not metal at all but four fine strands of tiny white pearls, running from a hook up near the ear down to an oxidised silver jhumka.
Available in Pearl White — white pearls against oxidised antique silver.
The pearl strands are the reason to choose these over an ordinary jhumka. Four separate lines of small pearls fall together in a soft curve, catching light along their whole length. Against dark oxidised silver, white pearls stand out sharply, so the chains read clearly rather than disappearing against your hair.
Functionally, the strands do real work. Because they hook up near the top of the ear, most of the earring's weight is carried there rather than dragging on the piercing. That is what makes it possible to wear a substantial jhumka through a long wedding function without discomfort.
At the bottom hangs a round silver top followed by a domed bell, both covered in fine granulation and floral detail, with a dense fringe of small pearls around the rim. The bell is proportioned to balance the length of the chains — a smaller one would look lost, a larger one would pull.
The jhumka hangs from the lobe while the pearl strands arc upward and hook over the ear. Many people also pin the hook into the hair for extra security, which is traditional and takes even more weight off the ear.
This is bridal and festive territory. Wear them with a heavy silk saree, a lehenga or a rich anarkali. Hair must be up or in a low bun — the whole point of a kaan chain is the line it draws from ear to hair, and loose hair hides it completely. Because the earrings already cover a lot of visual space, keep your necklace short or skip it.
Bridal earrings are heavy by nature, and a wedding day is long. The kaan chain exists to solve exactly that problem: by anchoring part of the earring higher on the ear or in the hair, it moves the load away from the lobe, which is the only part that genuinely hurts after several hours. Using pearls rather than metal chain is the refinement here, because pearls read as decoration rather than as hardware, so the support element becomes part of the design. It is a practical solution that happens to look beautiful, which is usually how traditional jewellery works.
Store them flat in a zip lock pouch so the pearl strands cannot tangle — this matters more here than with any other style. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and keep them away from water.
