A tall rectangular panel carrying a teardrop stone, with a peacock standing on each side of it, a small crescent hanging beneath, and two long chains descending from the panel's lower corners with clusters of bells along their length. Available in Baby Pink, Aqua, Blue, Red and Green.
Most Kashmiri earrings hang their chains from a round or crescent top. Using an upright rectangular panel instead does two things: it gives the design a flat surface big enough to carry a real stone setting, and it establishes a strong vertical at the top that the chains then continue. The result reads as taller and more deliberate than a curved top, which tends to spread the eye sideways before the chains take over.
The panel is engraved with fine detail and set with a teardrop stone near its upper edge. The two peacocks are modelled in relief and face outward from the panel's sides, their tails sweeping down along its edges. A small crescent with a central stone hangs below the panel, bridging it to the chains. The chains themselves are fine, hang free of each other, and carry graduated clusters of tiny bells. Antique gold throughout, darkened in the engraving.
Green is the natural pairing for peacocks. Red is the festive alternative. Baby Pink, Aqua and Blue are the softer, cooler choices. The panel, peacocks and chains stay gold throughout.
Hair up and secured, neck bare, no necklace. These suit silk and cotton equally and are a good choice when you want full Kashmiri length without the elaborate ear-cuff versions. They are narrow, so they do not crowd the jaw.
Daily wear with a kurta, festivals, pujas and weddings as a guest.
Light for the length. The panel is thin sheet, the crescent is small and the chains and bells weigh very little, so almost all of this earring is visual rather than physical weight.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
