This is not a drop earring. A peacock sits at the lobe facing upward, a flowering branch extends diagonally up and across the ear behind it, and from the bird's tail a short tassel of fine chains falls below. Available in White, Mint, Green, Black, Red, Aqua, Yellow Green, Multi, Baby Pink and Blue.
Almost all jewellery obeys gravity. An ear climber deliberately does not — it runs upward and outward along the line of the ear, which draws the eye up towards the face instead of down towards the shoulder. It reads as modern even when the motif is entirely traditional, and it is one of the few ways to make a strong visual statement without any length at all.
The peacock is modelled in relief with stones set in its crest and body. From it a slender branch extends upward at an angle, carrying small stone-set flowers and buds along its length, shaped to follow the curve of the outer ear so it rests against it rather than standing away. Below the bird, a short bundle of fine chains hangs as a tassel, providing the only downward movement in the design. Gold tone throughout.
Multi is included, carrying several shades across the flowers and crest — the easiest option if you do not want to match. Green is the natural peacock pairing. Red is the festive standard. Black and White are graphic. Aqua, Mint, Baby Pink, Blue, Yellow Green are the soft and two-tone options.
Hair must be up and the ear fully exposed — the whole design lives on the ear itself and is invisible otherwise. Wear nothing in the other ear except a matching piece, and keep the neck bare. These photograph extremely well in profile.
Festivals, weddings, receptions and photo shoots.
Light. The branch rests against the outer ear rather than clipping to it, and the only weight on the piercing is the peacock and the small chain tassel.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
